5 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning Before Winter

1. You Can See Debris or Plants Growing in Your Gutters

This one sounds obvious, but it's worth saying: if you can see leaves, twigs, or worse — actual plants growing out of your gutters — they're overdue for a clean. Seeds that land in debris-filled gutters can actually germinate. We've pulled full-grown plants out of gutters we've cleaned.

What to do: Don't wait. If plants are growing, the gutter is completely blocked and water cannot drain at all.

2. Water Spills Over the Sides During Rain

During a rainstorm, do you notice water cascading over the side of your gutters like a waterfall? That's called overflowing, and it means your gutters are blocked. The water has nowhere to go, so it goes over the edge — right where you don't want it, next to your foundation.

Why it matters: Water pooling against your foundation is a primary cause of basement flooding and foundation cracks.

3. Gutters Are Sagging or Pulling Away from the House

Gutters filled with wet debris are heavy. A full gutter can weigh significantly more than an empty one. If you notice your gutters sagging in the middle or starting to pull away from the fascia, it's often because the weight of accumulated debris (and standing water) has bent the hanger brackets.

What to do: This needs attention ASAP. A gutter pulling away from the fascia can cause fascia rot and may need reattachment, which is harder to fix in winter.

4. Staining on Your Siding Below the Gutters

See dark streaks or staining on your siding below the gutter line? This is called "tiger striping" and it's caused by dirty water overflowing from the gutters and running down your siding repeatedly. It's a dead giveaway that your gutters are regularly overflowing.

Secondary sign: If your siding below the gutters feels soft or spongy, you may have moisture infiltration that needs attention beyond just gutter cleaning.

5. Birds and Squirrels Are Visiting Your Gutters Regularly

Filled gutters with decomposing leaves and standing water are attractive to birds looking for nesting material and squirrels looking for acorns. If you notice animals regularly visiting your gutters, it's a good sign there's something in there worth visiting.

Bonus: Clogged, damp gutters are also a favourite spot for mosquitoes to breed in warmer months. Clean gutters mean fewer mosquitoes around your outdoor living spaces.
